Chapter Nine

The next morning, Mason arrived with several square bales of hay in the bed of his truck. Hannah watched from the window as he hopped out and began unloading them.

The muscles worked under his shirt as he piled them up under the apple tree. She’d missed Mason. Memories of them working the hay meadow together flooded before her mind. She drove the truck, Mason and Brody stacked hay into the bed. Now Mason probably had a fancy baler but when they were younger, they were the balers.

A little blonde head poked out of the truck. “Can I gets out?”

He continued working but called back to her. “In a minute, Sunshine. Let me finish unloading this and then we’ll head inside.”

Hannah frowned. It wasn’t that she disliked the little girl but she was a reminder of why Mason had left her for another woman. Everyone whispered about Lisa and the baby, after they’d gotten married. There was no way that they could hide the fact that Lisa was pregnant before they got married. She still had a hard time believing it was true but every time she saw Sunshine, Hannah had to face reality. Mason had been unfaithful to her and had married Lisa.

“Looks like it’s bring your daughter to work day.” Brody said close to her ear.

Hannah jumped. “Don’t sneak up on me like that?” She scolded.

“I’m not the one hiding behind curtains.” Brody placed a hand on her shoulder. “It’s okay to still have feeling for him.”

Hannah turned to face him. “Brody, what’s to stop him from hurting me again?”

“He never wanted to hurt you before.” Brody dropped his hand. “I hurt you, are you ever going to forgive me?”

“You’re my brother.”

Brody looked over her head at Mason. “He’s the man you love more deeply than yourself.” Then he turned and walked back toward his bedroom.

Sadly what he said was true. Hannah knew she loved him and would never love anyone else. She looked down at Bernard. Sometimes she wished she was just a faithful dog without the cares of the world on her shoulders.

Hannah picked up her purse. “Stay with Brody, Bernard. I’ll be back soon.” She opened the door and stepped out into the crisp morning air.

Mason smiled when he saw her. “Good morning.”

“Good morning. I see Sunshine is feeling better.” Hannah nodded toward the truck where Sunshine had decided to climb out of the window to get out of the truck.

He hurried to catch her. “Yes, she is. The little monkey.” Mason tickled her belly before setting her feet on the ground. He turned his attention back to Hannah. “Where are you headed this morning?”

“The library.” Hannah walked the short distance to her car. “I’m going to print some flyers for the Fall Festival. Brody can tell you all about it.” She started to slip inside the car.

How he covered distance so fast was a mystery to her. He hadn’t run but here he was standing at the car door. “Mind if I look at your flyer?”

Hannah pulled it up on her phone and showed him.
